Foreclosed Housing Help for Homeowners in 5 Cities

by Danny Gibson on June 19, 2009

Residents of Boston, Indianapolis, Chicago, Baltimore and Poway who are looking for foreclosed housing help should participate in foreclosure counseling and educational programs being conducted in their areas.

Even if the dates of scheduled sessions are already past, they can still call these nonprofits or city agencies conducting foreclosure prevention sessions to ask for help. Oftentimes, these organizations are offering counseling services, in addition to mass foreclosure prevention counseling conferences that they conduct occasionally.

In the Boston metropolitan area, the Dorchester Bay Economic Development Corporation and the national nonprofit HomeFree-USA have teamed up to launch a foreclosed housing prevention campaign in June.

Jeanne DuBois, head of Dorchester EDC, said the goal of the June campaign is to help about 1,000 troubled homeowners to save their houses from foreclosed housing inventories.

HomeFree-USA is a homeownership counseling group made up of HUD-certified counselors. Its focus in June in Boston is to help borrowers who took out adjustable mortgage loans with huge increases in their monthly payments.

Meanwhile, in Poway, the city is conducting one-on-one sessions for homeowners who want to receive foreclosed housing help. City officials will be helped by volunteer lawyers from the San Diego County Bar Association, real estate counselors from the Housing Opportunities Collaborative and officials from San Diego County.

In the Indianapolis metro area, the Marion County Alliance of Neighborhood Associations and the Franklin Township Civic League will conduct in June a four-hour workshop on foreclosure prevention called Buying Time.

The workshop, which is offered to all homeowners for free, will be conducted by Mildred Wilkins, a mortgage specialist who previously worked with Fannie Mae and who now advocates responsible homeownership and fights predatory lending through Homeownership Matters.

Wilkins will discuss how homeowners can use federal programs to buy time against foreclosure and how they can avoid pitfalls in negotiating with lenders.

In Chicago, the Greater Auburn-Gresham Development Corporation will continue to host free foreclosed housing workshops together with the Neighborhood Housing Services of Auburn Gresham and Englewood until September this year.

The partnership will also focus on helping borrowers who took out adjustable rate mortgages.

In Baltimore and in other cities of Maryland, the Pro Bono Resource Center of Maryland is conducting foreclosure solution workshops in partnership with the governor, state agencies and other legal services in Maryland.

On the whole, troubled homeowners in these cities should not give up finding help. They can still save their homes from foreclosed housing inventories if they have the income to sustain reduced monthly payments.
