Foreclosure Prevention: Scrutinizing Finances
14 August 2008The foreclosure crisis is one of the most talked about issues today. Losing your home to foreclosure is probably the worst nightmare for homeowners. For this reason, you should make sure that you are doing everything to avoid such unfortunate situation.

The first thing you can actually do is to scrutinize your finances. Here are some helpful tips that you should consider:
- Check your spending habits. If there are still areas where you can cut back, you should do so. You can also ask the other family members to support your cost-cutting program. You will be surprised with the result if everyone pitches in.
- Save for the rainy days. One of the reasons why many homeowners have lost their homes to foreclosure is that they did not have a fund to tap when emergencies happen. If you want to avoid using your mortgage payment for the payment of medical bills or utilities, you should try to save each payday. Again, this is considered to be very practical if you are serious about avoiding foreclosure.
- Look for other sources of income. If things are too tight, you can always choose to look for a part-time job to cover the deficit in your budget. Or you could always consider looking for another job that pays better or is nearer your home.
All these tips can help you organize your finances and make mortgage payments much more manageable. If you think that you are in over your hand, then talk to your lender.
Before things become worse, you should probably discuss with your lender options such as loan modification or refinancing. Of course, you will have to bring with you financial documents that will show the reason why you are requesting to modify the terms of your existing mortgage or why you are considering shifting to a new mortgage.
